Free Camping Near Lake Hemet, CA

Apple Canyon Yellow Post Sites are a series of three (3) campsites, each marked by a yellow post, all situated along Apple Canyon Road, on the other side of Highway 78 from Lake Hemet. These sites were designated by the San Jacinto Ranger District of San Bernardino National Forest as free campsites. Each campsite is restricted to a single party of campers, with no more than eight (8) persons and two vehicles. All sites are first come, first serve, no reservations. Site #1 and #3 are suitable for any size RV, while Site #2 might be more difficult to get a long rig into due to tight turns along the access road, though the site itself is large enough.

Apple Canyon Yellow Post Sites, San Bernardino NF

Site #1 – Suitable for large RVs, easy to get into, however offers the least seclusion.

Site #2 – The site itself is large enough for any size RV, and the site offers the most seclusion of the three yellow post sites. However the access road has some tight turns that might make this difficult.

Site #3 – Suitable for large RVs, easy to get into, yet offers a good deal of seclusion.

How Crowded: These sites are extremely popular. Site #3 seems to be the most popular. If you arrive on a Friday or Saturday, it’s very unlikely you’ll find an open site.

How Noisy or Peaceful: There’s a fair amount of road noise. Site #2 offers the most peace due to its secluded nature. During weekends, you’ll encounter a lot of people scoping out these sites.

Cellular Phone Signal: Verizon comes in fair to average, while T-Mobile and AT&T struggle, but still offer some signal.

Road Conditions: Apple Canyon Road is paved, though the access roads into these sites are hard packed dirt. Site #1 might pose the softest dirt, but 2WD vehicles are fine as long as the road is dry. Site #1 gets muddy in wet weather.

Amenities Within Campground: Just picnic tables and fire rings.

Cost of Camping: It’s free to camp at these sites, first come, first serve.

Campfires: Campfires are allowed during certain times when fire restrictions have been lifted. Otherwise, the entire State of California requires a campfire permit, which are free, and can be obtained online from CalFire Campfire Website.
