Free Camping on Toledo Bend Reservoir

This small recreation area is primarily a boat ramp, but is also an official campground according to the Sabine River Authority of Texas. Even though it's officially in Louisiana, it is co-jointly operated in conjunction with Sabine River Authority of Louisiana. Camping is restricted to self-contained visitors, which we understand to mean vehicles with black tanks and gray tanks.

Spillway Channel Recreation Area

Popular in the summer weather due to its river rapids, Spillway Channel Recreation Area is frequented by families with kids floating down the river on inner-tubes. The limited camping areas will make this a crowded place on weekends, so it’s best to arrive here between Monday and Thursday if you want to find someplace to camp.

With only trash cans as its camping amenity, you’d think that this place stays clean, but it doesn’t Unlike its Texas counterpart, Sabine River Authority of Louisiana doesn’t seem to be as diligent at keeping its recreation areas neat and tidy.

In our experience, this is still a great place to camp if you can get here during the week and leave before the weekend madness.
