Camping at Wolf Hollow Campground
This is a remote campground on the northeast edge of the Gila Wilderness located south of New Mexico Hwy 59 (Beaverhead Road). The Forest Service recommends high clearance vehicles. It’s first-come, first-serve campground, with the closest town with amenities being Winston, about 47 miles to the east.
Trail #773 starts at this campground and heads west up towards Black Mountain.
Small to medium-sized trailers can make it into this campground, provided you’re towing with a 4WD capable vehicle due to mud and soft areas during wet conditions.
Note there are lots of wildlife roaming through here, including black bear.
The best route into here starts from the town of Winston, NM, and taking State Route 52 to State Route 59, and then turn left at Forest Road 991. Note that Google Maps tends to be confusing because it doesn’t quite label these roads properly. The Motor Vehicle Use Map linked below is more accurate.
