Free Camping Near Estancia, NM

This is a small, developed campground offered free by Cibola National Forest. It's strictly for tent campers, though it has a small dirt parking area, but only large enough for a few small vehicles. Motorhomes and trailers just won't fit here, unless you're talking tear-drop trailers. Vans, pickup truck campers, or roof-top tents are doable.

Camping at New Canyon Campground

Open only during the months of April through November, this tiny campground at 7,800 feet elevation offers accommodations along Forest Road 245 (also known as County Road 067).

The route to this campground is accessible by any vehicle, 2WD is totally fine, and high clearance is not necessary. Motorhomes and trailers can make it up here. Most people driving along this road are headed to Capilla Peak Campground and Observatory at the top of the mountain. New Canyon Campground is more of a overflow campground that can take on just a few vehicles and tent campers.

This is a great campground for viewing the Fall colors and photographing wildlife.
