"Below the Dam" is a popular boondocking area along the Snake River, within the Palisades Ranger District of Caribou-Targhee National Forest. Located on the other side of the river from the town of Palisades, this designated dispersed camping area has room for dozens of full-sized RVs, some shaded by trees, and other right along the banks of the river.

Camping at Below the Dam

Dispersed camping at “Below the Dam” is situated along the west side of the Snake River just below Palisades Reservoir Dam. The road into this area is rocky and bumpy, but still suitable for any 2WD vehicle.

Maximum camping limit here is subjected to Forest Order 04-15-23-205

  • From May 1 to September 1, five (5) days in a 14-day period in the same 5-mile radius
  • From September 1, to May 1, normal occupancy rules apply (see Associated Documents below)
