Camping at Cosmic Campground International Dark Sky Sanctuary
There is also a dirt road leading south of the campground with as many as ten additional dispersed campsites in case the campground is full.
Cosmic Campground International Dark Sky Sanctuary (CCIDSS) is the first International Dark Sky Sanctuary located on National Forest System lands and also in North America. It is also one of only 14 certified IDA Sanctuaries in the world. International Dark Sky Sanctuaries are lands possessing an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights. For more information on dark skies, light pollution, or the International Dark Sky Association.
Because of its nature as a night sky observation area, there are no shade trees here, hence during the summer this place warms up.
Despite it’s designation as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary, this is not a crowded campground, except on weekends. During the week, several sites are open. You will, however, make sure to keep your lights down at night so as not to disrupt those trying to do some night sky photography.
