Dunes OHV Recreation Area

New Mexico BLM

Free Camping Near Farmington, NM

This small piece of BLM land was set aside specifically for OHV riding enthusiasts, but also accommodates vehicle campers. There are actually some covered picnic tables here, but are often spray-painted over with graffiti, and laden with trash. The entire area is fraught with litter, but it does offer a free camping area close to Farmington.

Dunes OHV Recreation Area

Covering more than 800 acres, Dunes OHV Area is a small portion of BLM land that lies outside the jurisdiction of the Navajo Nation. There is a staging area right along State Highway where most campers set up. You don’t want to set up camp any deeper into the OHV area because it gets sandy and you’ll easily get stuck.

You’ll find a lot of trash thrown around here, along with stacks of used tires, and mounds of dirt and debris dumped here by local contractors. The amount of graffiti sprayed onto the picnic tables suggest this area is a popular party location for youth.

In our experience, this area is good for a few nights during the week, but once Friday rolls around it gets noisy here. We also heard gunfire in the distance as if people use this area for target practice.
