Free Camping in Sam Houston National Forest

This hunters camp is open for anyone to camp in, even though it was originally intentioned for game hunters. It has no amenities, not even trash cans. It's also a popular place for local horseback riders, so expect to see horse droppings on the ground. During hunting season, this campground gets packed.

Forest Road 217A Hunters Camp

It’s just 3/4 of mile of dirt road you have to drive down to get to this campground, and this dirt road remains relatively easy to drive with minimal potholes. Although, you will find some low hanging branches. But being this close to the highway, you will hear some road noise at night.

The campground has several large sites with enough space for full-sized rigs. There are no designated sites here, it’s just an area with several wide spaces, some of which could easily hold two or three camping parties.

Otherwise, the grounds are fairly level here. There are even spaces between trees that smaller rigs could back into and get more privacy. There is also pretty good selection between full sun sites and full shade sites.
