Camping at San Juan Campground
This campground is located along Forest Road 016, next to San Juan Creek. The road in is rough, and requires high clearance due to dips, ruts, and boulders poking up through the road. It’s also a narrow road with trees and bushes brushing against the side of your vehicle. There are also several places where San Juan Creek crosses over the road, requiring 4WD to get through during wet conditions.
Generally, open May to October as weather and conditions allow, San Juan Campground is more ideally suited for OHV riders and 4WD enthusiasts. It may seem like an idyllic place to get some solitude, but there are still a number of OHV riders that will pass you by throughout the day.
There is no cellular signal reaching into this canyon, and the nearest supplies are in Austin, some 36 miles to the north.
