Camping at Southfork Campground
South Fork Campground on the backside of the San Gabriel Mountains lies tucked away in the middle of steep canyon walls descending from Mt. Islip from the South and Vazquez Rocks in the North. This campground offers year-round tranquility from city noise.
It’s a popular base camp for hikers and horseback riders. Adventurers can travel south along Big Rock Creek towards Islip Saddle and see seasonal waterfalls or spot a Nelson’s Big Horn Ram. You can also head east along the Manzanita Trail towards Vincent’s Gap or west to the Devil’s Punchbowl – one of the most geologically interesting places in Los Angeles County.
Campsites here are small, capable of accommodating trailers up to 16 to 20ft tops. There is a turnaround at the end that most trailers and motorhomes can make. Otherwise, the road into Southfork Campground is firm packed dirt and gravel, and suitable for 2WD vehicles.
An Interagency Pass (buy one online) or Forest Adventure Pass (see list of retail outlets) is required to camp here.
Southfork Campground is located 25 miles to Palmdale, CA, and 18 miles to Wrightwood.
