Camping at Upper Virginia Creek Primitive Campground

Upper Virginia Creek Primitive Creek Campground and Lower Virginia Creek Primitive Campground both run into each other, often making it difficult to determine where one ends and the other begins. Both are adjacent to each other, both run along the same road, and both enjoy the sound of rushing water of Virginia Creek.

This Upper portion tends to have small campsites, able to accommodate only small to medium-sized rigs and trailers no longer than 25 feet, though it’s common to see longer trailers here. It’s also common to see bears wandering through here, along with deer, elk, and coyotes.

This is a popular campground due to its relative closeness to the Tioga Pass entrance of Yosemite National Park, and for the fact that these campsites are under near total shade of pine trees. Elevation here is also at 9,000+ feet, offering a great reprieve from the summer’s heat in California.

Note: See Motor Vehicle Use Map, “Hoover Canyons” Page 6 linked below for this area.
